Lake Berryessa Golden Mussel News

Why Gold Mussels are in Issue

Golden Mussels (Limnoperna fortunei) are an invasive species of freshwater mussel. They are native to East Asia but have spread to other parts of the world, often through human activities like shipping.

Here's why they are considered dangerous:

Ecological Impact:

The Golden Mussel can rapidly colonize and alter ecosystems. They filter large amounts of water, which can reduce phytoplankton populations. An adult mussel can filter up to 1 liter of water per day, and 1 square meter of surface can host up to 200,000 mussels. They can also outcompete native species for resources and space.

Economic Impact:

The Golden Mussel can attach to and clog water intake pipes for power plants, industrial facilities, and drinking water systems, leading to costly maintenance and repairs. They can also damage boats, docks, and other infrastructure.

Latest Berryessa Quarantine and Gold Mussel Mitigation Information

Updated: 03/19/2025

Sweeney’s Sports has developed this guide to address inquiries and provide detailed information regarding recent mussel mitigation measures at Lake Berryessa.

To launch a vessel at Lake Berryessa prior to the stipulated 30-day quarantine period, watercraft must undergo hot-water decontamination performed by certified Lake Berryessa personnel. Decontamination procedures conducted at alternative facilities will not be recognized unless an approved seal is affixed to the vessel and the corresponding documentation is presented.

Please refer to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section for further details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Following red-tagging or decontamination, may I transport my vessel to other bodies of water?

A: No. Launching a vessel will compromise the wire affixed to the bow eye. Breach of the wire seal requires a subsequent 30-day quarantine or decontamination procedure.

Q: Can Sweeney’s Sports facilitate the red-tagging of my vessel for the 30-day quarantine?

A: Yes, Sweeney’s Sports provides red-tagging services Tuesday through Saturday, from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. To utilize this service, please contact the shop to schedule an appointment. Red-tagging is offered without charge. 707-255-5544

Q: Where can I obtain vessel decontamination services?

A: Currently, vessel decontamination services are available at Markley Cove or Pleasure Cove, located at Lake Berryessa. Decontamination appointments can be scheduled via the Solano County website: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule/d7392713

Q: Are there fees associated with vessel decontamination?

A: As of March 19, 2025, vessel decontamination is provided without charge. However, Solano County has announced that, effective April 7, 2025, decontamination services at Lake Berryessa will be managed by the marinas and will incur fees. Fee schedules are anticipated to range from $25.00 to $200.00, contingent upon the complexity and dimensions of the watercraft.

Q: What is the purpose of the Green Tag designation?

A: The Green Tag designation can be obtained through one of the following processes: 1) launching a vessel immediately following the completion of decontamination procedures, or 2) launching a vessel after fulfilling the 30-day red-tag quarantine period. In both instances, a Green Tag will be affixed to the vessel’s bow eye upon its removal from the water. Vessels bearing a Green Tag are exempt from subsequent decontamination or quarantine protocols.

Q: Is there a specific time by which I must be off the water to receive my green tag?

A: Yes, the time restrictions vary by boat launch. It is strongly recommended to contact the specific launch facility you intend to use to confirm their operating hours. For example, hours of operation might be 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Q: Is decontamination or quarantine required for kayaks?

A: As of March 19, 2025, decontamination or quarantine is not mandated for kayaks. Solano County stipulates that kayaks must be thoroughly drained and dry.

Q: Which launch facilities are currently operational?

A: As of March 19, 2025, the following launch facilities are open:

  • Markley Cove

  • Pleasure Cove

  • Steele Canyon
