Golden Mussel Infestation at Lake Berryessa: What You Need to Know

Why Golden Mussels Are a Problem

Golden Mussels, an invasive species from East Asia, threaten ecosystems by disrupting food chains and infrastructure by clogging water intake pipes and damaging boats.

Quarantine & Decontamination Rules (Updated: March 19, 2025)

  • Boats must undergo a 30-day quarantine or hot-water decontamination by certified personnel before launching.

  • Decontamination is free until April 7, 2025; after that, fees will range from $25 – $200.

  • Green Tags are issued to boats that complete decontamination or the 30-day quarantine, allowing future launches without restrictions.

  • Kayaks do not require decontamination but must be drained and dry.
