Berryessa Report

By Brandon Abernathy with RodDown Guide Service

It's hard to pinpoint these trout. One day they're in the deep water, and the next, they're in the shallows. You need to keep your mind open and cover a lot of water. But once you find them, stay on top of them and don't be afraid to change gear and speed.

Slow troll Kokanee gear at 1.4-1.6 mph. If that doesn't get them, change to spoons and speed troll at 2.4-2.7 mph. The fish are 22-65 ft deep. Don't be afraid to chase the marks. The fish are very active, and you can see them on your graph coming up to your gear. If they don't hit, that's when you change speeds.

The fish are scattered from the mouth of the Narrows to the Big Island.

Berryessa Trout Spoons

Stop by the shop to pick up a few color options of Speedy Shiners and Optimizer Junior spoons. This is what works now on Lake Berryessa right now.

We also have a large selection of Kokanee gear by J&J Tackle, Macks, and Rocky Mountain.

Pro Tip

Shad pattern colors and purples have been working best with a 25-foot setback.

Contact Brandon to book your own guided trip to Lake Berryessa.

Otherwise, stop by the shop for the latest gear, tackle, bait, and advice.

Robbie’s recommended flies  - WD-40  - Zebra Midge  - Jujubee Midge  - Sizes: #20-22 in various colors   -FB Pheasant Tails**

Other recommended Flies

- Blue-Winged Olives (BWO):   - Hogan’s S&Ms  - Quilldigon  - May It Be  - Micro May  - Juju Baetis  - Sizes: #18-20  Plan not to leave good water until you’ve changed flies and more importantly weight/bead size with occasional contact with the bottom.

We recently received more S+Ms, FB pheasant tails, tungsten zebra midges, French Dip, and assorted dry flies.

As always,
