Napa Fishing Report
Well, last week the second half of the Ocean King Salmon season kicked off. The weather conditions were great, and the fishing was even better. Many of our customers, and party boat fleets had early limits over the weekend and early this week. Boats going out of the Golden Gate and Bodega both found fish. The windy conditions came back for a few days but look for a continued salmon bite. Some really nice fish in the 25-40 lb class have been caught. We are stocked up on all the tray Anchovies and Herring as well as your favorite lures.
Halibut action in the SF Bay and Tomales Bay has been really good as well. Come down and talk to Tom or Austin about all the hot spots and ways to catch them.
Lake Berryessa is still kicking out fish. Anglers getting out and trolling in 50-100 ft are catching a variety of fish. Eagle Lake Trout, Rainbows, and Kokanee are all being caught. Limits seem to be hard to come by, but a few fish in the early morning is still possible. A variety of spoons, hoochies, and spinners behind a dodger are catching fish. We continue to bring in new lures and dodgers, from J & J, Rocky Mountain, Paulina Peak, and Double D Tackle. The summertime bass action is fair. Most of the anglers are reporting searching for bait balls still and fishing around them. With the water temps still climbing, those bass will be moving into deeper depths. Look for shade-covered rock walls as good areas in the afternoon. Areas in Pope Creek, Putah Creek, and the Narrows can produce those shaded areas. Techniques like drop-shotting Robo Worms or Senkos can produce fish. Look for a topwater bite early and late, with Zara Spooks, Whopper Ploppers, and buzz baits as top producers.
Lake Hennessy's bite seems to be slowing down. Most anglers that are targeting bass are catching a few fish. Crawdad patterned jigs, and plastics on the rock walls, and offshore rock piles are producing fish. I would also look for a topwater bite early and late here. Fishing with a frog on the weed beds and tule edges will produce fish this time of year. Come by and grab a frog and ask Chad for some killer techniques to up your chances!
We now have Kokanee, Salmon, and Trout fishing kits available for sale! Come in and check them out. The tackle was carefully picked by our guides and they start at $49.
Each kit includes a Free fishing seminar hosted by one of our Guides and Saturdays, 9am-10am in the shop. Halibut Fishing on a 16ft Aluminum Boat? We are going to start off by saying we don't recommend taking your small boats to the Bay unless you know exactly what you are doing. The weather had to be perfect and constantly monitored. Austin has years of guiding experience behind his belt and he captained his own boat. Still, we had moments where waves splashed into the boat and the bait run to SF harbor was rough. We did pretty well, however. Take a look and see for yourself what it's like.
