Fishing Report

Lake Berryessa

Lake Berryessa continues with the hot bite on Kings and Rainbow trout. Cooler temps overnight and mornings have really started to cool off the water temps, helping this bite keep trucking along. If you are looking for the opportunity to catch some nice kings head up to the lake. Trolling on the south end of the lake in 40'-80' with a variety of spoon and spinners seems to be the ticket. Use bigger profile spoons for the kings. Lures like Speedy Shiners, Kastmaster, and Rapalas are working well. The Fall Bass bite is really starting to improve! Right now you can cover water shallow looking for grass beds or go offshore and spoon around bait balls. The shallow water bite with spinnerbaits, LV500, underspins, and chatterbaits can produce some good action. The lake is loaded with bait balls right now. Anglers that are using their electronics are finding bait throughout the lake, and spooning are really getting them. Come down to the shop and chat with Austin for all the King Salmon techniques.

Napa River

The Napa River striper bite looks to have slowed down a little bit. However, the bite is still decent to good. I heard that the bank fisherman experienced a slowdown over the weekend, with less fish being caught and fewer keepers. Cut Anchovies and Sardines as usual are the top cut bait of choice. The boat anglers trolling and casting also saw a slowdown, but when you find the fish, you can catch them pretty good. I talked with one of our customers this week, and he reported that he found a school of stripers at a mouth of one of the sloughs, (undisclosed secret spot) that provided nonstop action for almost an hour. So, search around and don't stay too long if you're not getting bites. Spro Aruku Shad, Lucky Craft LV500, River2Sea Swimbaits, and Keitechs continue to be the baits of choice out there. We are getting reports of a few Salmon out there as well, as this is the time of year, we get a small run up our river. Throwing spinners upriver, or any of the levees breaks, and sloughs can produce kings. Large #5 Blue Fox spinners, and Mepps Flying C's are the best bet. Anglers using a 3-4oz jig can also have success jigging the deeper holes in the main river. Just remember that our river falls under the ocean regulation, so make sure your lures have barbless single hooks if you are targeting Salmon. Please send your pictures to team@sweeneyssports.com, or just reply to this email. Alex and Austin fished the river last week, this is how they did.

Hunting/Outdoor

The hunting season is in full swing right now. We have customers hunting in Northern California, and many heading out to their out-of-state destinations. Deer, Elk, and Bear hunting has been very good to some of our customers this year. One of our customers Rick Rosa had an amazing hunt for Tule Elk up at Lake Pillsbury. Rick first off won the lottery when he drew this coveted tag. There are only 2 bull tags for this area, and with good luck and max points Rick hit the jackpot when he drew this tag. Rick put in the work with multiple scouting trips, looking for a mature bull. With help from his entire family Rick experienced his dream hunt and harvested a heavy horned 7x7 old warrior. We are all so pumped for Rick for not only drawing a once in a lifetime hunt but putting in the work and harvesting a trophy of a lifetime on his terms. What a great hunt, congrats!!! Also wanted to give a shout out to Mike hunter, Nick Dalessi and Mike Young for having a great high mountain mule deer hunt in Wyoming's Region G. Although all three are coming home with saddle sores, they are coming home with beautiful bucks too. These three guys are not only great customers, but friends of the shop and we couldn't be happier for them. Although we are super jealous, congrats!!! Duck Season is right around the corner, opening day is October 22nd. Looks like the start of the season is going to be full of challenges, all caused from the lack of water. Most of the refugees in the Sacramento Valley will have closures and limited hunting for the first part of the season. With no water, many of our customers that have blinds in the duck clubs will also face the same problems. We need rain big time. Until then much of the hunting will be done on dry ground for geese or hunting in all waters attached to the Bay and Delta. This includes all of the Suisun Marsh/Grizzley Island areas, and the Napa-Sonoma Marsh lands. We are very lucky to have these areas so close by. Here at the shop we are fully stocked up on Duck hunting supplies. We are getting in Waterfowl Steel Shot loads when we can. This week we received a few cases of Winchester 3" #4 , and we hope to be receiving some #2 shot soon. If you need ammo don't wait, buy it now as the supply chain looks weak again. We also received some duck decoys in this week as well. Mallard, Teal, Widgeon, and Pintail are all in stock. We also have all of our remaining goose decoys on sale. We have snow and speck floaters, and some full body snow goose decoys still available.
