Will the latest storms end our drought?

The latest onslaught of atmospheric rivers gave us lots of water over the last few weeks. The run-off made it difficult to get out and fish. Debris and hazards were everywhere, but things are calming down.

The question is, will this rapid string of storms solve our drought issue?

The storms helped refill our reservoirs and piled up snowpack in the Sierras. Some reservoirs are near their historic levels, but still below capacity. See the chart below:

If reservoirs and lakes continue to fill up, this could alleviate some of the prolonged drought pressures of the recent past. Here is our snowpack situation as of January 17th.

So what is the verdict?

It took us 3 years of water deficits to end up in a state of server drought. It will likely take us as many good water years to climb out.

Still, here at Sweeney's, we are gearing up for a strong 2023 outdoor season. As such we are making significant investments to fill up our pegs and shelves with fishing and hunting products you need to enjoy amazing experiences outdoors in 2023.

Speaking of hunting, we've got killer specials on a pair of top-end bows:

With the rain passing, it's time to dust off your tackle boxes and go fishing.

Napa River Fishing Report

Prime time for Sturgeon. Things on the Napa River have settled down a bit and we starting to get reports of nice fishing being caught. Bank anglers can find action in areas like under the Hwy 29 bridge, Cuttings Wharf, or hiking from American Canyon to the train bridge. We have plenty of cured and frozen shrimp, salmon roe, and herring. As for Striper action, well the lure and fly-fishing action are over for a while. Soaking cut baits like Anchovies, and Sardines is going to be the only method for a while.

Ready for the Sturgeon frenzy? We've got EEL!!!

For the first time in years, we've got a delivery of Lamprey Eel!

$13.95/Pack. We got as many as we could get our hands on. Get them before they run out.

(Limit 2 packs per person. So we have enough to go around)

This Friday we are expecting a shipment of weights, hooks, and sturgeon leaders. We also have a good selection of rods and reels, if you are looking for an upgrade. Otherwise, check your equipment and head out there. We'll be fishing the Napa River next week. Expect a full report and a new video.

Lake Berryessa Fishing Report

Lake Berryessa has a great run off and levels are coming up slowly. It's time to target catfish!!! Areas like the Pope creek and Putah creek arms, the very north end of the lake around both creek channels, Capel Cove, and Pleasure Cove will all be great areas to try. Try cut Shad, Mackrel, Sardines, liver, or good ole Night Crawlers. We have received reports of some nice size catfish caught this week. There is actually a decent bass bite going on for those that are trying. The minnow bite for Trout is still going on, but stained water from all the runoffs will slow that down for a little bit. For now, Catfish is what is ordered up!! Send us some pics of those big cats.
