First cast:

Napa's Not-So-Still Waters: An Adventure for the Determined Angler

The crisp morning air hung heavy with the promise of adventure as Jeff and I launched my boat at Cuttings Wharf. The Napa River shimmered, reflecting the rising sun. This wasn't just another fishing trip; it was a quest to conquer the secrets this river holds.

The Napa River is a beauty, no doubt about it. But beneath that picturesque facade lies a cunning adversary. It's a river that can leave even seasoned anglers stranded, their boats high and dry on hidden sandbars.

Then there's the fishing itself. It's a constant dance of patience and experimentation. Trolling, casting, bait fishing – every day throws a new curveball.

Second cast:

Striper Trolling Clinic Update

Last week we introduced our new experience for both existing and aspiring boat captains.

We have 2 spots left for the boat captains and 3 spots for deckhands for our August 24th/25th clinic.

Our purpose is to improve our collective striper fishing skills on Napa River while meeting and connecting with like-minded people.

Fishing Reports

Napa River

The striper bite is opening up. We have customers reporting successful bank fishing and trolling trips.

Our team fishes the Napa River weekly and we always find them torlling. Click here for detailed trolling techniques.

Successful bait fishing starts with live bait. If available grab Grass shrimp, Pile Worms, Mudsuckers, and Bullheads and head to the river. You'll have a better chance to get bites and catch fish.

As for the frozen bait, use cut anchovies, sardines, or scented ghost shrimp.

Lake Berryessa

Lake Berryessa Fishing Report

Trout fishing continues to be red hot. Trolling around Narrows and the Island using Speedy Shiners produces the best results. No flasher is needed. Direct tie the lure onto the swivel and backset 150-200 ft behind the boat. Use 8-10lb line and leaders for better action and to avoid break-offs. The water is still cold enough and these fish are large and feisty.

The successful anglers report fairly fast trolling speeds of 3 to 3.8 mph. Right now both trout and kings are mostly being caught between 15-85 ft of water. The water is getting warmer, expect the fish to go deeper. Try using Optimizer Junior lures as well. Some folks are reporting great results using both Speedy Shiners and Optimizer Juniors.

It's important to continue trying a variety of colors until you find what the fish are keying in on that day. Here are the 3 mistakes you should avoid and have a better day on the water than I did recently.

As always,

We truly appreciate every time you walk through our doors. Thank you for choosing to spend your hard-earned dollars with us. It's a privilege to be of service.
