Captain doesn't have all his shots yet, so he can't say hello to your pooch just yet. We'll be able to host doggy play dates in a couple of weeks.

This week in Fishing


Lake Berryessa Fishing Experiment - Leadcore Line, Planer Boards, and New Minn Kota

Yesterday, Shane and I took Catch Happy HQ on Lake Berryessa, armed with a brand-new Minn Kota Terrova trolling motor and a boatload of gear to test. Launching before sunrise at 6:20 am allowed us to beat the crowds and get a jumpstart on a full day of fishing and experimentation. From the Terrova's performance to leadcore line and planer boards, we put a variety of techniques and equipment to the test. Here are our findings. 





Leadcore Line Experiment


In addition to the Terrova, we also experimented with leadcore line as a method for fishing deep without downriggers. We spooled two rods with multicolored leadcore, where each color represented a specific depth, allowing us to easily gauge our fishing depth based on the amount of line released.



While the leadcore setup was fairly straightforward, tying a monofilament leader to the leadcore proved to be a bit tricky. We opted for a 14-foot fluorocarbon leader with an 8-pound test, terminating it with a small swivel for attaching our lures.

Napa River Striper Fishing Workshop



On September 20th we're hosting our 2nd Striper Fishing Workshop.


If you own a boat or are interested in learning effective boat trolling techniques consider signing up for our Napa River Striper Fishing Workshop. Learn with and fish alongside the experts to conquer the waters with fellow enthusiasts. Expand your network and build relationships with your future fishing partners.


Agenda:


  • Captains and Deckhands Strategy Breakfast at Club Sweeney's 8am-10am

  • Meet at the Boat Ramp - 10:30am 

  • Napa River Team Fishing Session - 10:30am-3pm (Outgoing tide)


We are looking for up to 5 captains to be matched with 5 deckhands.


Our workshop is ideal for both seasoned captains seeking to hone their expertise and aspiring deckhands eager to learn.

Customer report of very good guided fishing bringing up impressive fish. Fish are more susceptible during higher flows. As the flows recede, access improves, but fish become more aware of your presence.
